To paste paper onto another paper or to paste paper onto silk is called “backing”. It is the most common technique used in the preparation of art on paper within Japanese and Chinese traditions. Paper materials are prepared in a different way than in Western practice. A Japanese Karibari or Chinese paper wall are used to dry and flatten paper.

This workshop focuses on hands-on experience. Participants will learn the basics in using an Asian drying wall and will get an understanding for the backing technique. As well, participants will gain knowledge into how Japanese and Chinese papers are constructed, giving new insights and inspiration when working with all types of paper.
